A Universal Love Language
James “StickNasty” Small’s inaugural album reminds us of music’s universal way of expressing love and gratitude for oneself and others. Warm, uplifting, and deeply personal, this debut drop is an expression of those emotions for when words just aren’t enough. Paired with iconic rhythms that exude the immense love, compassion, and beauty the world has to offer, even in the face of hardship, this album represents James’s depth of experience and life through COVID.
The project took him through the blossoming love of the early stages of his relationship with his now fiancee, the rise and momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement and protests, and the fear and isolation of the pandemic. In response, Small endeavored to create an album that would inspire people to love, to move, to connect, to dance, and to be in community.
Drawing inspiration across many genres like gospel, hip-hop, and pop, A Universal Love Affair is the collaborative voice of Bay Area musicians that StickNasty has known and loved for years. The album can be best described as a “family affair”, with the hope that it will serve to uplift some of the Bay Area’s best work and continue the artistic momentum of the Bay Area.
